Bethesda’s Fallout 3: Survival (i.e. Awesome) Edition

by Paul

If you’re a fan of the Fallout series (and why wouldn’t you be?), then you might be interested in the survival edition of Fallout 3, which is available for pre-order now from etailer giant Amazon.com. Included in the lovely package is the usual stuff from the special edition that you can get at other stores like a lunch box, sound track, and making of DVD, it also comes with a replica of the PIP Boy that doubles as a clock. The Fallout 3 Survival Edition will be available in all the most popular flavors: PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Of course, you really don’t need any of these things, but if you’re going crazy for the release of Fallout 3 why would you not get this?

Will We Get KotOR 3? Former LucasArts Staffer Says Yes

by Paul

If you’re a game developer, what’s the best way to ensure that you’ll have all your current secret projects leaked to the press? Fire a bunch of your employees for no reason! When LucasArts let go one hundred staff members the rumors began flying by disgruntled employees. Perhaps the most intriguing is that KotOR (or Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic) 3 is in development. According to the staffer, KotR is the super secret project being worked in conjunction with BioWare and it’s not a single player adventure, rather it’s an MMO.

I’m as happy as the next KotOR fan about getting a new game, but an MMO? Really? I can’t stand MMOs. I don’t have the time nor the willpower to waste on days worth of level grinding, much less have the desire to have to pay a monthly fee to play a game.

Other games rumored to be in progress are an Indiana Jones game, another Indiana Jones Lego game, and a Star Wars lightsaber game. Can’t wait to hear what the non-Lego Indiana Jones game will be about.

Possible Rock Band 2 Box Art

by Paul

After the success of Rock Band it was almost a matter of time before serious talk of Rock Band 2 emerged and it has! Through a couple of online surveys we’ve been getting some hints at the creation of the new game. The first survey asked participants about a possible price point. The second survey was a little more interesting as it asked participants which of two possible box art samples was more appealing. Here’s the first:

Gears of War Figure Updates

by Paul

If you’re looking to get your hands on a miniature Marcus Fenix or Locust, then your dreams are almost coming to fruition because they are already on store shelves. However if you prefer to get them all at once, then toy maker NECA has something just for you. They’ve packaged together the entire stable of Gears of War figures that are currently available into one box for about 65 bucks on some web sites.

If you also happen to be in San Diego for the 2008 Comic Con and you’re a Gears of War fan, NECA’s Gears of War exclusive will be Carmine, everyone’s favorite helmeted target. If you’re not going to the con, then expect to shell out a few bucks for it on the secondary market (i.e. eBay).

LucasArts Thinking About Re-releasing Classic Games

by Paul

In news that made me as giddy as a school girl, LucasArts is thinking about re-releasing some of their classic adventure games on the Nintendo Wii. Lucas Arts is quoted as stating:

“We have looked at it,” admits Norris. “It is something we are continually looking at - new venues to put out our library of games on. We’re not announcing anything about that because honestly I don’t know anything about it.”

“The cart size of the DS makes it impossible to put out ports of any of our old graphic adventures,” claims Gullett. “There’s literally not enough room on those carts to put the games out.”

“It could still happen,” rallies Gullet. “We’ve got a lot of pride in our heritage and it’s definitely something we’re still leaving open.”

If there was any way possible to do so, it must be done. Newer generations should be exposed to games like Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle (I still have my Corley Motors T-shirt). Hell, there’s even licensed games like Sam and Max Hit the Road or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis that need to see the light of day again. The Nintendo DS would be a fantastic platform for these kinds of games, but if the cartridge is too small then there’s not much you can do about that. The Nintendo Wii would be a decent way to play these games considering their point and click interface, so why aren’t these available as downloads on the Wii Virtual Console yet?

One Handed Controller: On Sale Now!

by Paul

Over on Kotaku they ran a story about a one handed controller that is now for sale for the price of 129.99. The controller is designed for disabled people that either only have on hand or can only use one hand and this has got to be the greatest idea ever. I can’t imagine how terrible it would be if I lost a hand and was unable to get my games on anymore, I’d be beyond depressed.

And if you don’t miss the obvious, the one handed controller would be good for the two handed too. The U.S. needs some games where players can… have one free hand… for stuff. Hey, don’t look at me that way! Everyone does it! We need some super fun adult games released to help balance out the amount of horribly violent games out there. Boobs not war people, boobs not war!

Gamer’s Suprise: A Misfortunate XBox 360

by Paul

The most recent “gamer gets screwed” story hitting the nets lately is that a gamer purchased a 360 along with a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV at his local Target , but was surprised to find that their 360 wasn’t working upon opening the box. Why you might ask? The Xbox 360 was gutted and instead of fun giving microchips and circuits there was a book:

The book inside was the children’s book, “A Series of Unfortunate Events”, so whomever had done this must have had a sense of humor while both stealing and f-ing another person over.

You might ask how this might have happened. I used to work at a retail store and this kind of thing is all too common. I’m guessing that whoever originally bought the Xbox 360 gutted it and returned the item and the return/exchange desk only performed a cursory glance at the Xbox. The worst part about this kind of theft is that when the person that comes in pointing out that they got books inside their Xbox instead of… well an Xbox… the return desk will be a little suspicious, after all it could be a person performing a scam claiming that they had been scammed. Personally I ran into this once when I worked in electronics. A person bringing back a PS2 claimed it was filthy. After I opened the box I found a really old ass PS2 that had been around the block a few times. I let the return go through, but that was up to me. Hopefully the guy who purchased the expensive book carrier here will be able to convince the Target staff that he’s the victim, not the culprit.

Guitar Hero: Metallica

by Paul

The next spin-off of the Guitar Hero franchise has been revealed to be… Guitar Hero: Metallica. The news came about after it was discovered in SEC filings of the game as one of the four Guitar Hero games being released in 2009.

Following in the footsteps of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the game will presumably allow you to play with Metallica as you rise through the ranks of rock stardom. There are no details as of yet if there will be any other bands representing in the game, but one must assume that there probably will be if it’s anything like the much publicised Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. As an added bonus and unlike the Aerosmith game 99% of the songs probably won’t suck… well at least most of their early songs up until they started getting.. ah hem.. experimental.

Wenches Get Boob Reduction in Age of Conan

by Paul

This post is rated PG-13: You’ve Been Warned!

It was recently reported on the nets that players logging on to the new MMO Age of Conan were both shocked and angered when realizing their player characters had received an unrequested breast reduction. It wasn’t just a cup size reduction to make it easier on the female avatar’s backs, either. It was almost a full on mastectomy:

Rock Band DLC Update: Week of 6-02-08

by Paul

rockbanddlclogo.jpg

This week brings another round of Rock Band DLC and Harmonix is really bringing the heat. First full albums and now this week there’s six songs from two artists. Too bad both of them pretty much suck, although corporate drones that like to get “crazy” on the weekends and angry kids not angry enough to listen to metal will certainly be happy. That’s right both Jimmy Buffet and Disturbed will be available for purchase this week by Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.

The offerings are:

* “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett

* “Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Jimmy Buffett

* “Volcano” by Jimmy Buffett

* “Indestructible” by Disturbed

* “Inside the Fire” by Disturbed

* “Perfect Insanity” by Disturbed

The Jimmy Buffet songs are master recordings, but with a twist. They’re newly recorded songs specifically for Rock Band. It’s pretty cool that he digs the game so much, but really what else does he have to do besides rake in a lot of cash? If you have no taste you can purchase the Buffet songs for $1.99 each (160 Microsoft Pretend Points) or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Imaginarium Points) for the pack.

The Disturbed songs are also master recordings, but not super special for Rock Band. What’s nice about their songs is that they will be available for a limited time at a discounted price. They will be $.99 per track (80 Microsoft Points) for the limited time, or $2.99 (240 Microsoft Points) for the three pack.

More thoughts and videos of the songs after the break!

Street Fighter IV Trailer with Faith No More

by Paul

There’s just something about seeing the new Street Fighter game in action that leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy inside, much like the empty love I receive from a Twix bar. Check out the latest trailer for Street Fighter IV featuring music by Faith No More. Wait! First guess which Faith No More song they used then hit play:

Wii Fit Is Great - If You Can Find It

by Dave Parrack

Wii Fit has been out in the US for almost two weeks now, and has sold extremely well so far. In fact it has sold so well that the problem now facing potential fitness freaks is trying to find a copy of the game.

Online and offline retailers are already reporting shortages, and many people keen to get hold of a copy of the game to maybe kick-start a fitness regime are finding themselves out of luck. The incredible success the game enjoyed in both Japan and Europe has now definitely been repeated in the US.

The Nintendo Wii itself is still in short supply, even though it has now been out a year and half and you would think everyone who wanted one would have already got hold of one. But Wii Fit has increased the demand. The console may be cheap compared to it’s rivals the PS3 and Xbox 360, but the game is certainly anything but.

Why I’m Finally Playing Grand Theft Auto IV

by Paul

Yep, I’m a hypocrite. After writing the article a few weeks ago giving five reasons why I’m not playing Grand Theft Auto IV, I’m addicted to it now. The reason why I am playing the game so soon after writing the article came about from a perfect storm of getting a PS3 as a wedding gift and then having a roommate who had gotten GTA IV for free for the PS3. There was no reason left for me not to at least try it out.

Halcyon Studios Gets Blade Runner?

by Paul

The Halcyon Company is looking to make a couple of games based on works by author Philip K. Dick as well as making a few movies based on his work. They haven’t said specifically if they are making a Blade Runner game, perhaps Philip K. Dick’s most famous work, but they’d almost be fools not to. Although, I’ll admit it. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the book that Blade Runner is based on, kind of sucks. I know I just committed a sin saying that, but it really wasn’t what I was hoping for when I picked it up. Any game based on it worth it’s salt would have to borrow heavily from the movie or else I’m not interested.
