MegaCon 2008 - Comic Geeks Show Video Games Love
Yesterday I had the pleasure of walking through geeks, dorks, and nerds that surprisingly, didn’t smell as bad as I thought they would. MegaCon 2008 is taking place in Orlando Florida for 3 days, it is a generally comic focused event, however throughout the years I have been going (over 10 years), it has expanded further and further into other geeky related realms, Sci-Fi movies/television, Toys, and of course… Gaming.
Video games is definitely one of those subjects that hits very close to home for many basement dwelling comic book fans (like myself), so to help support this love, people like to dress up as their favorite characters and have their pictures taken by strangers. Luckily, I love to take pictures, so please join me as I stroll through some of the gaming related people that were about, along with comparison shots in case you don’t recognize the characters:
A little Final Fantasy love with “Black Waltz” - Not a bad job, I was just standing in line waiting to buy my ticket to get in and he was wandering about (Thanks to laura for the correction, I had put it was “Vivi” before folks):
Oh man, so many people were playing their Nintendo DS’.. including these three kids whose mom made the little Jedi very sad by making him let his little brothers play (Spider-Man and The Thing):
My first claim of “THIS GUY WINS” was said after I seen this Phoenix Wright, he brought his own sign and everything, classic stuff:
Resident Evil - Umbrella army represent:
Travis Touchdown of No More Heroes, the costume was all right, but his “lightsaber” made the costume complete. If you have played the game, you would appreciate the detail that went into it:
Hitman (not pictured is the back of his head which had a barcode on it and everything, easy enough costume to wear… but still good):
First Link out of like four I seen. Not bad:
In his spare time, Link likes to put down the Ocarina and play the drums in Rock Band:
Stormtroopers like Rock Band too:
Luigi enjoys some Super Smash Bros Brawl (the line was so big to play it, thus sad face Luigi):
Fat Master Chief:
These Gears of War people were soooooooooooo good. They all looked serious and pissed even when the cameras weren’t flashing for them, I would declare them winners of the day, but my favorite is at the end of this post, so keep scrolling down:
Must respect, Pyramid Head. Silent Hill isn’t the most widely loved and publicized game, but man, the people who enjoy it go all out with their costume, good times:
The best costume of the whole event. Portal’s Companion Cube. Someone needs to give the parents to this kid some kind of award for allowing him to dress up as a box with hearts, I have no doubt he was very popular yesterday because of this costume:
Want more!? Check out my post on Destructoid for some other non-gaming geeks, as well as a picture of my tubby ass rocking out on Rock Band drums.

Ah cool, editing the picture and post now, though similar, his costume is twice as better now that I know who he actually is, as the bell in his hand makes sense now. Thanks!

Damn that line was long. I really don’t think the costumes were great at Megacon. There were some good Storm Troopers and Gears of War suits, but those are store bought.
