Disney Announces ‘Ultimate Band’ For Nintendo Wii & DS - New Competitor For Guitar Hero & Rock Band?
It was bound to happen. As with every other industry, you get a successful game, and then a whole host of imitators. Guitar Hero was the original game to put you, the gamer, in the role of member of a band, and then Rock Band took the idea and ran with it, allowing you to choose to be a singer, guitarist or drummer. Now there is to be a new addition to the genre, in the form of Ultimate Band from Disney.
The game will only be available on the Nintendo consoles, Wii and DS, mainly due to the fact that Disney Interactive were keen to keep costs to the gamer down by doing away with the need for any expensive add-on peripherals. So the game, when it gets a release in the fall, will use the Wiimote, and touchscreen respectively. Gamers will be able to play lead guitar, bass, and drums, using just a combination of the already existing controllers.
Coming from Disney, you’d imagine the game to be aimed at a younger market, you know, the little people who get their kicks by watching High School Musical on repeat to send their parents mad. To a degree that’s true, and the company is hoping the more family friendly game play and cartoony graphics will help give the game much wider appeal than its competitors.
The strange thing is that the three songs that have been confirmed for the game, namely Steady as She Goes by the Raconteurs, the Who’s My Generation and Fell in Love With a Girl by the White Stripes, are all adult oriented, and make me want a copy of the game.
Few details are available yet as to how many songs will be included, and how the game play works. I love Guitar Hero, and am desperate to play Rock Band, so I’m quite confident this would be my kind of game. I just hope being family friendly, and less of a sim, doesn’t detract from the game at all. If not, Wii owners in particular look to be in for a treat.
