I don’t write about Nintendo that much and for good reason, there’s not a whole lot of interesting Nintendo news. I know that the Wii is the top selling console and all that, but seriously there’s not a whole lot of interesting news about games. Almost everyone I know that has a Wii gets bored of it and complains about the lack of games. Well here’s some news: Nintendo has admitted that they expect to see a drop in profits due to the recession.
Since one person with limited time can’t cover everything important in the world of these electronic entertainment devices that kids seem to love these days called “video games”, I figured I’d round up a bunch of news stories for your convenience. Enjoy!
Megan Fox Plays Guitar Hero - At least in this one picture. And she still would never, ever, ever have sex with you.
UC Berkley to Offer Starcraft Course - Not everyone in Berkley is a hippie! They’ve got super nerds too. Man, while most people are worries about keeping their jobs or finding new ones in this age there’s still college D-bags that are taking courses in video games. Nice.
So I downloaded the Resident Evil 5 demo the other night on the 360 and I have to say I was very impressed. It takes a lot for me to be impressed in a Resident Evil game, because I’ve never really cared for them. I’m not sure why, but I’ve never really gotten into that type of game play.
This demo was great based simply on the co-op. I didn’t really find a whole lot that hasn’t been done before, but what what is there works. You each start with a pistol and a different second weapon. Both players then take on the odd non-zombie, zombies. At certain points one player can assist another like hoisting the other up to a ladder or helping the other player jump further. You can also share items, which comes in extremely handy if you are playing with someone who isn’t super greedy. I ended up passing my grenades to my buddy since I was having a tougher time getting into and out of the item management screen, whereas he’s been playing Resident Evil forever.
All in all, I’d say that based upon this demo the game is going to be worth a purchase. Even if you don’t like the Resident Evil series that much, if you’re a fan of co-op gaming you’ll want to check this one out.
Okay… I’ll finally admit it. I’ve never played any of the Half Life games. Yes, I do deserve your booing and your hissing and maybe even some of the vegetable matter that you are throwing in my general direction. It’s funny, but the Half Life games are on the list of, “I need to play that someday” where for whatever reason that someday never comes. Odd how that happens, isn’t it? Well, to make up for the anger and shame you now direct at me how about I post this picture of a Legoized Half Life diorama?
Neat! There’s that one guy, the thing on the dude’s face, and that hole in the floor. All of which I’m very sure are important facets of the game of which I’m ashamed that I’ve never played.
So my friend and I (who shall remain nameless) decide that we want to play Resistance 2 co-op with another friend of ours on line. I get my PS3 running and quickly find myself pissed off. You see, it took us at least fifteen minutes to figure out how to start a private room, invite our friends into the room, and then have the friend join. Why? Because it’s needlessly difficult.
Thank God for the interenet. Where would we be without it? We wouldn’t get to see any awesome fan movies based on video games, that’s for sure. This little video is a teaser for a movie based on Final Fight, which so far is not real, unless Chris R. Notarile of Blinky Productions gets his way.
I’ve got to say that a movie based on a mustachioed, wrestler Mayor sounds like gold. Throw in two buddies and have them slowly walk from left to write punching, kicking, and body slamming hundreds of opponents with the occasional break of fighting a mini-boss until they eventually take down the main villain, then you have a Oscar contender on your hands. I know what you’re say, doesn’t this sound like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? Okay, you’re right but Final Fight came out in arcades way before the film version of Benjamin Button was released. The novelization was written prior to Final Fight, yes, but in the novel they walked from left to right. Clearly that’s an entirely different story right there.
By the way, Notarile has also filmed fan film type stuff for Powergirl and if he were to make any film based upon an established property, I’d kill to see a live action Powergirl film over any film based on a video game. I’m sure this will never happen as the amount of nudity that I’d demand in a Powergirl film would never allow it to be shown in theaters.
So a news item is being carried on the internets that has me scratching my head a bit. For some reason it’s news that there are no plans by Bethesda to change the fact that Fallout 3 players can’t continue playing after they beat the main quest.
Okay, I get that it’s odd that Xbox 360 users and (presumably) PC owners can keep playing. But still, who doesn’t save before they beat a game? It’s not like you don’t know that the ending is coming up. It’s fairly obvious when you’re on the main quest and not. It’s not like Fallout 3 is the first game that wouldn’t let you continue after beating it. Maybe this is just me, but I’d have to put this into the “not newsworthy enough to actually focus one entire post about” category.
Indiana Jones was due to have a multi-platform adventure in Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, but it looks like those plans seem to have been canceled for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. The good news for Wii and PSP owners is that the Indiana Jones game seems to be still coming out on those systems. It also might appear on the PS2. Before you rejoice too much, this really isn’t a good sign for the game. It’s never a good sign when plans are scaled back like this. Still, the trailer looks pretty good even though it doesn’t seem to show any actual game play.
Indiana Jones hasn’t had a very good reputation when it comes to games, so this thing is either going to rock or completely suck.
So out of the many, many jobs that have been cut in the last few months mine was included in those numbers. My employer gave me a 30 day notice a few weeks ago. Once that’s up, I’m out the door.
As someone who enjoys gaming, it’s pretty tough to consider the fact that I won’t be able to purchase anything new for fear of not making rent or having money for food. I’ve formulated a plan to get me through these tough times, at least until I get a new job:
There’s some new Ghostbusters: The Video Game screenshots floating out there on the internets that are looking pretty damned good. You can check them out on Kotaku or I’m sure any number of places by now, but they were the first place I saw them. While the graphics don’t look entirely stunning, they certainly look good enough to get the job done and that’s the least that Ghostbusters fans can hope for. Do you need a bookcase to look super realistic or would you rather have a great looking ghost and even better looking Ghostbusters?
I thought I didn’t like football, but man I really don’t like Final Fantasy. When I found out there was a Final Fantasy countdown clock, I was immediately angered by the realization that they are still making these games. Okay, maybe anger isn’t the right word, maybe just mild annoyance at the fact that I had to think about Final Fantasy for even the briefest of moments.
Since I ran out of interesting news today, here’s an update on my progress on Fallout 3. I’m still addicted, but not as much as I was previously. I suppose it can be chalked up to the fact that you can only look in so many desks, file cabinets, and boxes before the process becomes tiring. I will say that the exploration and side quests have really kept my interest though, considering I’ve spend over fifty hours on the game and I haven’t even really begun the main quest.
There’s some Star Wars Battlefront 3 footage that will make you weep bitter tears. Why? Because Free Radical is no longer around to complete the game. A new developer has it, but the game will lose some really awesome tech. A Free Radical employee said, “It’s my understanding that the game’s been passed to a new developer, but the tech that allowed you to fly from the ground, to air, to orbit, to space dies with Free Radical’s involvement.” Oh that would be so cool, damn it. That still means we’ll get a Battlefront 3 game that hopefully lives up to the Battlefront legacy, but who knows.
